94 Intrepid strange transmission....

Ok, my 94 has 153,000 miles on it, runs great, have only had to do normal stuff to it in the about year I have had it, the other day I replaced the struts on it, not a big deal, but boy were they rusted.

After I replaced them, I pulled it out and took off, as I was slowing down for a light, I felt a nudge, then it was in limp mode, I figured I knocked something out of whack while changing the struts, it was late, I figured I would look at it the next day..... One other strange thing, the lights on the dash to indicate what gear it is in would not work, or I should say not right, they were all on, all the time, no matter what gear it was in. Since I have owned the car it would do that when in park, but would show what gear it is normally.

Next day I woke up and headed to work, and it was back to normal, shifting fine, and as relieved as I was, I am still a little puzzled.

Has anyone else seen anything like this? Or do I just have a wierd one?

you might have an intermittent short w/ your transmission range sensor; it also indicates what gear your in on your instrument cluster. If you want, you can go to a dealer or a service shop of some sort and see if they can pull up any codes from your transmission control module that may be in memory.

Do you know if that is inside the transmission or is that in the console with the shifter?

it's inside the transmission mounted on the control valve body.

Thanks, I will have to look into that when it warms up, with any luck it wont go out completely until then.

I have another question for you, this car has started making a wierd whining noise over say 35 mph or so from the front around the front left tire. I pulled it off, lookad at the usual stuff, made sure the brake wear indicators were not rubbing, the wheel bearing was replaced along with the ball joint, tie rod and the struts were replaced, and the axle. The one odd thing I noticed was the output shaft on the transmission was really loose, I would think there is some kind of bearing that is wearing out in there, question is, is it easy to replace those bearings or is it one of those that you have to tear the entire thing down?

on the passenger side there are roller bearings but on the drivers side are bushings that act as a "bearing." If you have a bad bushing, guess what, the entire tranny's coming out to fix it. Check your tire, make sure you don't have any steel belts that are seperating or have already seperated.

I just looked at my post, I said left tire, but its the passenger side, ugh, but that side has the bearings that can be replaced, can that be done with the transmission still in? And also, do you know where I could order that from?

The tires are not the greatest, I was going to put 4 new ones on it, but I wanted to make sure the transmisssion was not going to go out on me before I spent that money on it.

Thanks for the info!!!!!

the bearings can be replaced inside the vehicle but the entire differential assembly has to come out, check the level of your fluid, there's a check/fill plug on that side by the differential, put your little finger in the hole see the condition of the fluid, if it's black and has metal pieces in it, drain it and replace it w/ 80W-90 hypoid gear oil. If that checks out to be ok, get those tires checked, faulty tires will cause weird sounds to develop.
