2001 How can I decode or reset service engine light?

Does anyone know the procedure to decode the service engine light on a 2001 LeSabre Limited without using a scanner or tool? For example on my 2002 Altima you use the accelerator following special steps to decode (read the flashes) and then reset the light.

Your help is appreciated!

If you have an Autozone they will scan the car for free.

Ive heard that this works to remove the SES,disconnect the battery positive cable and then turn your ignition (hold) to the on position for at least 1 minute and release. Connect the battery cable and then turn the key to the off position. This procedure will extinguish the SES light. Start the vehicle and everything should work fine and the SES light should be off. Next be sure to take it out for a spin and let the PCM relearn.

This procedue didn't work for a 2000 LeSabre Custom. Got anyother ideas besides taking to the shop? The car runs fine, don't know what caused the light to come on.
