I have a 96 Dodge Van 3.9
It started coughing and loosing power last week. I replaced the catilatic converter, and both O2 sensors.
It has run fine for 3 days. Lat night, it began coughing again and the check engine light came on. It flashes a code 51. That refers to an O2 sensor, right?
We also tried to replace trhe MAP sensor, but when we pluged it in, the engine would not keep running. It ran good with the old sensor.

HELP!!!!!

Here:

http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html

51 Oxygen sensor stuck at lean position (Bob Lincoln wrote: may be tripped by a bad MAP sensor system causing a rich condition, and the O2 sensor trying to compensate. The O2 sensor may still be good. The MAP assembly consists of two pieces, the valve and the vacuum transducer (round plastic unit with cylinder on top and both electrical and vacuum connections) - If you get hot rough idle and stalling, especially on deceleration, accompanied by flooded engine and difficulty restarting, that can be a bad MAP sensor causing the O2 sensor to try to compensate. If you get poor cold driveability, stumbling and bucking, and acceptable warm driving with poor gas mileage (a drop of 10 mpg or more), that is usually the O2 sensor. [Webmaster note: MAP sensors seem to die regularly.]

I think what I would try is to put that new MAP sensor in, and then disconnect the battery to clear any codes it had, and then try to start it again. It should work.

Ok, I tried the MAP, It worked fine for about 8 miles, then it strated loosing power again. It choked down to about 25 mph coughing and popping. I would pull off and let it set for about 10 min. then start it again. We had power for about 2 miles then it would loose power again. This time I have codes 51 and 52.

Could it be possible for the fuel filter and pump to be causing the problem?

I doubt it. I'd probably try changing over those oxygen sensors at this point, since that's all the codes it throws.

I had that problem with my van. It was the fuel pump.

it most likey is the fuel pump I have the same problem and I changed the filter(new filter is 80 bucks) I cut open the floor aqbove the tank and put a hinge. What I am going to try is to add a generic fuel pump outside the tank in addition to my existing one.

well i recently had error 52 from a non working fuel injector jet

granted mine is a 89 with tbi injection and yours is a 96 with port injection, also yours in obd 2 with 2 oxygen sensors

so the information is hard to cross reference

but you should definitely start with a fuel pressure reading. you can diagnose the injectors on the vehicle if they are clogged but its a little involved for you...

look into it though
