Common problem... Replace the switch. ;)

I also had this problem. I looked into changing out the switch myself, but then didn't want to mess around with deactivating the air bag so I opted to have a garage do it. I think the bill was around $200.

I just stick a dime in it to wedge it on. Or you can have it changed. My way only costs .10 =) lol

I have the same problem with my 99 alero.

Does anyone know how to replace the switch?
Does the steering wheel have to be removed.

No, the steering wheel doesn't have to be removed, but the airbag module does. If you do this job, you'll need to disarm the airbag before you do it. Once that is removed, the switch is just held in by some screws. It comes as a unit with both sides - the on/off side and the cruise functions side. Also, if you do this, part of disarming the air bag includes disconnecting the battery, so be sure to deactivate the theftlock on your radio, or you'll have to clear the theft protection when you reconnect the battery.

I have a 2000 Olds Alero, and my cruise control stopped working last year. The dealer quoted me some astronomical price to fix this. What SHOULD it cost, does anyone know? And has GMAC not issued a bulletin on this, as it seem sot be a common problem ... I also have an UNcommon problem, which is that the button/knob you push in on my gear shift (automatic) fell out, and once pushed back in, will not let me put the car in park (so it had to be removed for now, leaving me with this little stick device to shift with until it's fixed). Again, the dealer quotes me a huge price tag. Has anyone else experienced this?

This, actually, isn't too uncommon. I've heard of at least 5 other people talking about the same issue on 99-2001 Aleros. I think its pretty easy/cheap to fix on your own, but I also think you have to purchase the entire hand piece for the gear selector.

You can remove the old gear selector by turning the key to th 'ON' position and, with the hand brake up, putting the selector in '1'. There is a little clip behind the gear selector that holds it on. I think you can use a small flat head screw driver to get this out, then the piece should just slide right off the top.
