Electrical Problems
planoxj 01-20-2005, 03:41 PM I have two issues i am trying to figure out. 1. My turn signals do not flash. I can move the turn signal lever to indicate left or right and the corrosoponding lights come on both front and rear, but they do not blink. they stay solid. If I turn the hazzard lights on all four turn signals blink properly. The flasher unit has been replaced. 2. The second issue has to do with the headlights and the istrument lights. When the headlight switch is activated i have not panel lamps. Also the radio enviromental controls and trip computers go dark. They still function but there is no illumanition. It apears that instead of dimming the devices it cuts power to the displays and the instrument lamps. any suggestions would be helpful. In both questions i have checked all the fuses in the fuse panel located to the left of the steering wheel and the one under the dash on the passenger side back2life 01-23-2005, 10:09 PM Have You Changed Any Bulbs? Were They Working And Then Just Stopped? Check Numbers On Front And Rear Bulbs With Part No's From Auto Parts Store. Make Sure You Have The Right Ones. I Believe There Is Separate Flashers For Hazards And Turn Signals. There Is A Dimmer Switch In The Dash Controls To Dim Or Brighten These Lights You Didnt Specify That They Work At All I Dont Think? But Anyway What Year And Type Of Vehicle Is It? planoxj 01-24-2005, 11:34 AM As it Turns out there are seperate flashers for the Hazards and the turn signal. On the 1989 olds 98 the turn signal flasher is located on the left hand side of the steering column and the hazard on the right. (reverse those if your laying down looking up at the steering column). Price to fix turn signals $1.89 As for the second problem of the instrument panel lamps the soultion presented itself last night on the way home. While driving down a bit of a bumpy gravel road the interal lights began to flicker on and off and a slight popping sound came out of the dimmer switch. (The dimmer switch I had previously removed the other day when i tried replacing the headlight switch to fix the problem. I had taken the dimmer swithch apart and cleaned it to aparently no success.) Slowly adjusting the dimmer switch up and down I was able to locate a spot on the switch that allowed the lights to work. If the switch is moved the problem returns. So it is the dimmer switch after all. Price to replace the dimmer switch $13.99 Bought the car for $800.00 and was told it needed almost a thousand dollars in repair work. (I.E. Mechanics quote to previous owner for chasing down electrical problems) Runs beautiful and drives great and has only 100000 Granny miles on it. Fixing the $1000.00 worth of problems for under $50.00 bucks PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! back2life 01-24-2005, 09:32 PM This Comes To Show You,dont Always Assume The Worst! Keep Oldsmobile Alive! juniperjen 01-26-2005, 03:19 PM I have a similar problem with my 78 olds omega in regards to the turn signal's the left turn signal flashes very quickly and the right one just stay's on. I first replaced all the bulbs, then the flasher, but not the hazard flasher (but i checked the ohm's) on that one. then checked all the fuses. then checked for short's. then replaced the headlight switch assembly, then replaced the turn signal switch. did i miss anything? they still don't work. help back2life 01-26-2005, 09:07 PM sometimes the front bulbs may be different than the rear check auto parts store for the correct number of bulbs. may be wrong also check and make sure the wiring harness has a good ground on the side that doesnt work. connect a test light to 12 volts, take bulb out of socket and touch probe to the side of it on the inside if it doesnt light then you have no ground,if checking for power or to see if it flashes reverse the testlight to a ground and probe for 12 volts. Lreeser 10-29-2005, 12:54 PM I have a 1995 Old 98 that just developed the same headlight switch/dimmer problem. When I turn on the headlights the instrument panel lights go out or get very dim. This Olds model has a combination headlight switch and dimmer. My first try at solving the problem was to replace the headlight switch (~$60). It didn't fix the problem. I was so sure the switch was the problem that I bought another one, thinking the replacement switch was bad. It still didn't fix the problem. Sometimes the instrument panel lights will flicker, making me think there is a loose connection somewhere. Or maybe the light sensor is going bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated. jonathon_50703 12-23-2005, 11:59 PM i'm out of answers I hope nothing happens like that to my 1992 oldsmobile 98 Regency because We dont have very much money to screw with. shunka1 01-11-2006, 03:17 PM dimmer switchs today are made of carbon conposit they ware out or devlope dead spots spray cotact cleaner in the switch and move the wheel rapidly up and down shunka1 01-11-2006, 03:17 PM dimmer switchs today are made of carbon conposit they ware out or devlope dead spots spray cotact cleaner in the switch and move the wheel rapidly up and down AutomotiveHelper.com, Copyright ©2013
