1999 Pontiac Grand Am caught on firesuperfiremom 01-16-2005, 03:52 PM My car caught on fire while I was driving it I have a 1999 Grand Am. Two weeks ago I was drving down the road when someone flagged me over and told me that I had flames coming out of my tailpipe. I had no previous notice or warnings that this was happening. The fire and insurance investigators on my claim cannot find the point on ignition. I had exactly 10 secs.to get out of my car before the whole back end exploded. Has anyone heard anything like this? Anyone have any suggestions of what might have caused it? I was very lucky that my daughter was not in the car, because she would have been in the back and would not be here with me today. GreaseDog 01-16-2005, 04:55 PM without knowing the cause of the fire, you have no leg to stand on in court. cant go after anybody, much less General Motors. if you can find the point of ignition, then MAYBE you have a chance. if you do decide to go after anyone, make sure its not GM, one individual vs. a large corporation, you will lose. meti 01-28-2005, 03:14 PM unless you get layers who are willing to take the risk and split the money with you :) well I bet it had something to do with the gas tank. was there any leaking or the ground being wet before it exploded. I mean if the group was dry and may be it left tracks of gas but i dunno! :( Hoags 01-28-2005, 04:24 PM I would consider consulting a lawyer but find one that does the "no money from you unless we get money for you." The first thing they will most likely look at will be you service records. If you had any engine or exhaust work they may go after them. If the flames were comming from the tail pipe it would not be from the gas tank, if the flames were comming from the area of the tail pipe the problem may have been a leak in the tank or filler tube and gas may have been dripping on to the exhaust and when it got hot enough the gas lit-up. Good luck in what ever you choose to do, and yes be very thankful that you are here to seeking advise from others. GreaseDog 01-28-2005, 04:35 PM count your blessings that you are alive, and let it be at that. people are too sue happy today. Slade901 01-28-2005, 11:21 PM Unless you are running rich all the time (ruptured fuel pressure regulator diaphragm). Excess fuel tends to accumulate in the catalytic converter and the catalytic converter will be glowing red hot and can even start a fire when driven on a dry grass or dry leaves. Over time, the honey combs on the catalytic converter will disentigrate and flames might come out of the tail pipe. OR Someone was messing with your exhaust pipe muffler and injected some fuel or flammable item in the muffler and cause it to caught fire. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
