I just purchased a 1998 tracker 2dr. 2wd and there is a switch beside the shifter in the console,it has A/T "p" and "N" can anyone tell me what it is for? i looked behind the switch and the plug is disconnected.
Also, how can I identify what auto trans. I have,3 speed or the 4 speed, it only shifts twice...goes into 3rd fine but it seems it needs another gear....4000 rpm at 70 mph!!! can anyone relate to these figures, there is no overdrive button on the shifter as i have read from other post/threads.. any help is very much appreciated.

I dont have a switch like that on my 93 Tracker, but I also wonder about the 4000 rpm at about 70 mph. Is there supposed to be a lock up torque converter on these transmissons? I know mine is a 3 speed, but just about every other 3 speed I have driven, you can feel when the converter locks down, and this one does not, which relates to horrible gas mileage on the highway.

Is there anyone else with a 3 speed that gets lower than 4000 RPM's at about 70 mph?

It sounds to me like you need to put it in overdrive (4th gear). That's the push button on the top/inside/back of the shifter. The overdrive light should be OFF on the dash when it's in OD.

The P/N switch is used to switch the transmission shifting pattern from "economy" (N = lower RPM shifting) to "power" (higher RPM shifting). Put it in overdrive, take off smoothly and feel for the gear changing while checking the tach. The tach should dip a little every time it shifts. If you feel 4 shifts, the P/N switch might be your problem. If you feel only 3 shifts, your overdrive switch may be disconnected or a defect in the "brain" or broken wire. Everything on my Tracker works, so I'll run it down the road and try to duplicate your problem. If I can,
I'll get back with you.

No OD on mine, it is a 3 speed, no button or light on the dash, do these transmissions have a lock down converter?

I believe they do.

yes they do have a lock up torque convertor if the lock up isn't working you will tack 4000 at 70 considering the rear end gears on the auto 3 speed is a 4.89 gear and 5.12 on 5 speeds the switch is bad the run 40 - 45 buck from the dealer that is a dealer item only and the go bad all the time after the switch it will still get up to 3500 rpm at 70 but the mileage on these are only 25 to 36 mpg and the autos only get abut 28 tops on hwy but average about 30 in town another problem they have is the egr valve too but that switch will have to be ordered through gm and takes 7 to 10 days to get and you have to drop the tranny pan to change it
