I recently picked up a 1987 Ford Escort station wagon for cheap. It runs perfectly and I haven't had any problems with it until recently.
The other day, the automatic seatbelt just quit working. I can't figure out why. What I have figured out is that it's going to cost me a lot of money and hassle to take it into a shop to even have it looked at, let alone fixed. I just want the stupid thing to go back up so it looks like I'm strapped in, so I don't end up with a ticket, instead of sitting there by the windshield. I've taken off the panels on the divider between the back and front doors, but I can't see anything wrong. I think it may be the motor, as I was driving tonight, and suddenly it moved into normal strapped in position. But it went back to the near the windshield position when I opened the door again, and stayed. So I'm thinking a loose wire or something. Obviously the track isn't stuck.
I also can't manually force the seatbelt to move back at all.
Anybody have any idea's on how I can fix this, or at least get it locked back so I'm strapped in. Even if I have to climb in and out from under the stupid thing, I'll feel better.
Thanks.

Im told ford is required by law to honor the seatbelt for the life of the car( says so in my owners manual) so take it to a dealer for repair. BTW I had a car that did that and something with the wire in the door and the door pins needed to be replaced because the door sagged a little.

This is exactly what happened to my 91 wagon this past weekend. I don't have the owner's manual. Do you have any more info. on this problem?
