2000 Alero, turns over but won't start, think it might be the starterErikChicago 01-13-2005, 08:08 PM Hello all, looking for some ideas on what might be causing this problem and if it's worth trying to fix myself. My 2000 Alero suddenly will not start. I've never had a problem with it, in fact it started just fine when I left work this evening. I turned it off and came back an hour later to start the car, and the engine will turn over but the car won't start. My first guess is that it's the starter, just wondering if anyone has other ideas on what might be causing this. GTP Dad 01-14-2005, 06:39 PM If the engine will turn over then it is not the starter. I would guess that you have a fuel pump problem. Fuel pumps can die just like you described, I had one that my wife drive home from work one day and the next morning wouldn't start. Turned out that the fuel pump crapped out just like that. To check see if the fuel pump is working you can listen for it to come on when you first attempt to start the car. If you can't hear it then have someone turn the key on while you listen back at the tank. A stethoscope works well but if you don't have one then use a screwdriver against the metal and the handle against your ear. If the tank is silent then the pump is bad. As for fixing it yourself you can do it with regular hand tools just be careful trying to lower the tank. Probably save you 200 bucks. Good Luck! ErikChicago 01-14-2005, 06:45 PM Yeah, the same exact thing happened to a friend's Alero like 6 months ago, and it turned out to be the fuel pump. I have no idea why I typed starter, and twice no less. I'll just chalk it up to a long work week with very little sleep :D I got a buddy that runs a shop a few miles away, gonna see if I can get it started, if not I'll just have it towed out there. ErikChicago 01-16-2005, 11:58 PM yep, it was the fuel pump. fixed now. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
