85K Mile Tune Up PLZ Help!

I am the proud new owner of a 93 GT. 85Kmiles and needs a major tune up. Can anyone tell me what I should replace or inspect at this time besides the obvious like plugs/air cleaner/wires/fuel filter.

Do the valves need to be adjusted on this car? I heard they used shims for adjustment.

I also need to have the timing belt replaced. How difficult is this to do myself? I have air tools and such and have worked on cars all my life but never done a timing belt before.

Lastly what are the reccomendations for suspension upgrades?

My friend had to change the timing belt on his gt. he couldn't do it himself so he sent it to a mechanic. they charged him $1300 because they had to pull the engine. my '93 GT has 172,000 miles on the original belt, so unless the belt is in bad shape, i'd leave it.

timing belt should be replaced every 30,000 miles as far as 1300 for a timing belt change i hope they didnt do him to hard i had mine changed for 60 bucks for suspensionive always been a fan of eibach

Completed the tune up and sure as shit, massive oil in the spark plug wells. Looks like I will be doing that job very soon.

After the tune up however it has these wierd flat spots and it doesnt have that kick at 4 grand anymore. Does the timing need to be reset after a simple tune up?

Just so ya know I changed:

Spark Plugs (Bosch Platinum 2)
Cap and Rotor
Fuel Pump
Stock Fram Air Filter.

Plug wires have to wait till I fix the leaky valve cover gaskets.

You will probably have to adjust the timing again - and actually, it may be caused by the Bosch plugs. The twin ignitors can cause havoc with certain cars. I'd try swapping back to a standard set of plugs (NGK or Denso are the recommended Mazda fitment) and see what happens. I know that's gonna be a bitch, but hey - you changed 'em once already! :biggrin:

yea, i installed bosch 4 prong plugs, and my car ran like shit, then i put some cheap brand single prong in, and it's running like usual. but the kick at 4000 seems like it could be the VRIS plates, cause they kick in at like 4250 or something, i don't know if the timing would have screwed with those or not, any way, i have oil in my plug wells too, and it's killing me, if i don't want to have the weird flat spots, i have to replace plugs every 2k miles. it's a real pain. anyway, let us know how it works out, good luck!

as for the timing belt being 1300, that is such B.S, and if i was your friend, i would really complain about that, cause mine was $150, and even that was a little high. unless if his timing belt broke when he was driving it, and it did some sever damage to the piston's, then i could see it running around that price, but that was stupid to pay, cause you can get a fairly new klze (30 more hp) for like 600. my opinion, most mechanics suck, and if they say that they had to take the engine out to change the timing belt, they are freaking idiots. and sleeper i'd get that changed, if it breaks your looking into some serious damage, unless you really don't care...

I'll second both of those statements. My halfway-decent Haynes manual gives a step-by-step on exactly how to get the timing belt out without removing the engine - all you gotta do is take the intake and the cam covers off and it's right there. And yeah, if you're running past 60k on the same belt, I'd definitely get it changed - no exceptions.
