3 on the tree to 3 on the floor?

Is it possible to take a 3 on the tree manual transmition and change it to 3 on the floor without having to change steering columns or changing out the transmition? I don't know a ton about cars, but my dad is pretty well informed and he isn't too sure how someone would do it himself. I do know that finding measurements for the cutting where the shifter will go is one part.

I ask this because I'm looking into a 72 nova with a L6 and 3 on the tree. I would want to take engine rebuild anyway and drop in a 350 or 396. In the future I would want to change it to a 5spd but as far as money is concerned right now, I would be extremely happy to just change it to 3 on the floor. I know changing from 3 on the tree to the floor is WAY easier than trying to find all the clutch linkage and pedal and the bar not to mention the firewall cuting from what my father told me, to change from an automatic to stick.

Any replies are GREATLy appreciated

Yes you can do this. It is rather simple, the hardest part is cutting the floor. You can go to almost any parts store and buy a 3 speed shifter (about 100.00$). I sugest a Hurst. Disconnect the origonal linkage from the steering column and the transmition and take it out, Their is a little pin at the bottom of the origonal shifter that you can nock out with a punch to remove the shifter. Cut a hole in the floor pan above the transmition(not to big, not to small) "kinda tricky". Mount the new linkage that comes with the hurst shifter and mount the shifter then you can ride. I did this same thing to my 1972 L6 3-speed last mounth. It took about 2 hours You may also want to weld a bar from the reverce lever on the column were the old linkage was to the new reverce linkage on the shifter, so that your key will not come out of the switch unless the transmition is in reverce.
