I have a 1997 GMC Yukon with 112,000 miles that's leaking antifreeze on the drivers side of the engine, in the area of the oil filter housing...

I've received two estimates: $1,500.00 to replace the manifold gasket, valve cover gaskets, and to replace the water pump...

The second estimate was for less than $200 to replace or repair a freeze plug.

Has anyone else experienced this?

had the same problem with my '98 yukon about a year ago. it had about 90,000 miles on it. I had the manifold gasket replaced and my truck is now good as new, problem solved.

I bought the vehicle with 126000 miles on it. It was traded in with a bad intake manifold gasket. Get a third opinion. There's a local shop (Tuffy's in Davenport, IA) that when you take it in, first it needs this, then it needs that. Before you know it you spent $3000 to fix an o2 sensor. My Advice is take it somewhere that charges for a diagnosis and if decided to replace that money goes toward the repairs cost. make sure you find out there labor rate first though, LOL. Different states differ. However in the state of IOWA if a written estimate is given the shop must come within 10% of that estimate to fix the problem ON THE ESTIMATE SHEET. And even further if $ was paid to diagnosis the problem, then it is there fault for mis-diagnoising the item, since the diagnosis was a service provided to the customer at a charge. This is one good reason why some shops have free inspections so they can fix a problem and say something else is bad with it. Whereas if they charge for a diagnosis thats there fault. Again All states differ. GL on not getting screwed.

i had a leak in the plug that holds the tube and seal in place.

i had to replace the dex cool every week or so cuz they couldn't get the part in in a timely fashion.

if you get it repaired, make sure its a reputable shop that will warranty the work. i personally will never go to an independent shop again, long story...

and remember, its dex cool, not anti-freeze.

you put antifreeze in there and you're gonna have some problems. :D

Kevin are you talking about the hose that goes from the heater hose to the qucik disconnect on the passengers side of the engine? If so I had that problem as well. Don't think that's his problem as its the drivers side, however, If that's what your talking about I feel your pain. Took me 3 hours to fix that damn thing. It busted off in the Intake, still in the threads. Had to cut it out then clean the threads as good as possible. What a nightmare. F.Y.I. for anyone this happens too. Buy a new one from the Dealer, they will try to sell you the old ones. They have since updated it to a heavier non-sheet metal type of metal. You have to ask for the upgraded one it's suppossaby for "specific vehicles" any radiator shop will tell you B.S. buy the heavier one.

oh yea, Another thought, alot of oil change shops have cooling system pressure testers. Tool goes on the radiator cap, you pump pressure in the cooloing system until the anitfreeze starts spitting out from where its leaking. Try getting a buddy and flashlight, or call your local oil pits and see who offers this service.

Very nice, congrats on the business to bad your selling. I do remember driving by the place now. Just a few blocks east of Division if I remember correctly. It's always a good day though when a real estate agency wants to buy a property. Maybe I'll stop in when you open back up. On the positive end it gives you a chance to relocate.
Oh by the way, the other day I smashed up my front bumper cover. Found a new one @ almost $400.00 and a Recycled one @ $199.00 shipped. I won't use that ebay/aftermarket stuff. Do you have access to OEM merchandise? If so pm me. 99 Denali just like the name :-)
Also I'll bet you know what I'm talking about with tuffy's? freaking crooks, lol. I have yet to find a reputable local repair shop. You in the know? hmmmmm, maybe Moline Transmission needs to branch out to engine repair. That would be nice.

there is a shop called A.C.T they are a tranny specialty shop, very nice. they are on the higher side of pricing but they are by far the best around, as far as oem body parts goes no i dont know off hand where to get them, but if you get one from a junk dealer i could paint it and install it for you.

I also have a 97 Yukon, and my friendly local Chevy dealer told me my intake gasket is leaking, but said to just keep an eye on it and make sure the recovery tank stays filled.
I was quoted only $500 to replace the intake manifold gasket.

Mine is leaking about 1 cup every two months or so....

I also had the antifreeze leak, it was the intake gasket, my mech told me the Yukon is notorious for this. Cost was 375 with oil change and new dex antifreeze.
