Hi , My friend has a 90 accord automatic.
If i let off the gas, or if i brake , I can hear a rattling noise.

Could any1 tell me if the problem is with the engine or the trans.

THere is no noise on acceleration or idle.

Thanks
John

Check and see if your cv boot is torn. My cv just went out and that was the first sign for me. A cv is about 60 dollars and its an easy fix.

Funny, but my mechanic said that the rattling is from the exhaust.

some part needs to be welded or something like that.

Thanks for the help anyways

Of course he does, Welding up your exhaust costs more than fixing the CV joint. Im sure if "your friend" were you to look around on the forums just the slightest amount you, Im sorry I mean "he" would see that sound is really common for 90 accords. I would tell your friend to look in a Haynes auto manual, or take his car to an import specialist for a 2nd opinion before shelling out any $$.

I've known it to happen with the exhaust as described, but it's usually a metallic "buzz," not what I'd call a rattle.

Well, I'm sure the ratling is not from the cv boot, because If the car is in park and I give gas, if I let go off the pedal, I can hear the rattling from the region of the cat convertor. It actually sounds like two plates vibrating against each other.

I'm hoping its nothing major, with the cat convertor.

Thanks again.

Could be the metal heat shield under the cat converter. That's a welding job, but not a very expensive one.

I had a similar problem with the heat shield on the cat converter rattling at 2000 rpm. When I ripped the heat shield off the rattling stopped.
