Overheating on a 1994 3.1 Corsica

I have a 1994 3.1 corscia what seems to be an overheating problem (at least that is what the gauage shows). I have change antifeeze and thermostat everyyear. I have replace radiator one year ago. The temp gauage goes to hot even while the engine is cold. Coolant level is correct, all seems to be fine. I drive a couple of blocks and the guage goes over to hot and I know the engine has not had time to heat up. Mileage is 146,000. Not sure what is going on here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

sounds like air, or a bad heater core....

My son's 94 Beretta (same engine) always showed hotter than I thought it should (ran between 1/2 - 3/4 a lot of the time and I have seen others here complaining about the same thing. I would try and borrow a scan tool to check the actual temperature the sensor is showing first. Perhaps even replace the sensor (not much money). I remember that my 91 showed a higher temp than I thought it should when it was still only around 5-6 years old. When I had it serviced for another problem I mentioned to the tech and they actually replaced part of my wiring(no charge) and has showed normal (1/4-1/3) ever since. Perhaps there was some kind of recall??? I suspect the sensor is not right, but you need an actual measurement somehow. Should be 195 deg to maybe 210 or so.

My 94 Corsica was doing the same thing the past two weeks. I did everything you did and it would still go up to the red line after driving about 2 miles. I finally took it in to the shop yesterday and they said that the gauge must be wrong because everything was working as it should be. I suggest that you take in to a shop to get it checked. Hopefully there is nothing wrong with yours, as there was nothing wrong with mine

Thank you to everyone who responded. This is what I found. There is no radiator cap, just the reserve take with a cap. You can not really tell how much anti-freeze is in the radiator by checking the reserve tank. I filled the tank-drove 15 miles, let cool-checked and the tank was showing low. I eventually added 1 1/2 gallons of coolant. Don't know where it is going. Not leaking, and no white smoke from the exhaust. I do know now, that it was low on coolant. Anyone have any ideas on where my coolant is going. The oil is fine when I change it. It looks good. The valve cover does have a little milky residue around the opening where the oil is added. (Might be a intake gasket?)Thanks to all who have replied to try and help me.

even though this thread has been all but dead for the past week I thought i would tell you what they finally figured out what was wrong with my car-intake leak. Pretty major job but not as bad as if it would have been a head gasket
