02 Intrepid ES heating system sucks!

It heats great and cools great, but it is VERY finicky!

(The temp is set at 72°F)
If the car decides it is 72.1°F, it will blow 60° air at the top fan speed!

If the temp then drops to 69.5°F, it will slowly blow HOT air, then decide to blow SUPER hot air on the top fan speed!

Anyone else experience this? Is there a filter I need to clean? Temp sensor to replace? can I yank the damn heater control out and make it manual?

The ATC should have a diagnostic mode. Here's how to check:

Have the engine idling and set the temperature on the panel to 75 degrees and push in and hold the Floor, Mix and Defrost buttons all at the same time until the display starts to blink, then release the buttons.
The control display will continue to blink, and then show two-digit codes, if any are present. The codes range from 23 36 on most models.
It could be the ATC in-car Sensor (code 26) or it's fan. With the system on, place a piece of tissue over the 'Dodge' emblem on the dash. If the fan is working it will stay there, if not the sensor fan assy. needs to be replaced.
