hello
i have a 1998 intrepid ES and the check engine light came on. I got the codes, they were P1684 and P0406. If anyone knows what they mean or anything please let me know and if they know where the part is located at. Thanks Matt

Matt:
I would like to help if I can but, I do not recognize the codes. Where/how did you get them? A 1998 has an OBD II system, and they show double didgit codes.

Alvin.

P0406 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit High
P1684 shows in "generic" codes but does not show in Chrysler specific list shown below....However both 1683 and 1685 show in chrysler list and are different from the generic 1683 and 1685...so this one...?!?

codes beginning with P0... are generic (similar for all makes of cars) while P1.....may be specific to a manufacturer..

check that for generic info

Alvin,
i got the codes by turning the key on, off, on off, on then the codes came up where my milage is. Do the codes stay in the system until you take them out or if the problem is fixed will they be cleared??
Thanks Matt

Hey MAtt...I did not know that! everywhere they will say the only way to retreive OBD2 codes is with a scan tool.....This is bombshell!!!

Matt,
O.K. you interrogated the PCM (Computer) using the On Board Diagnostic Ignition Key method to get some trouble codes....
The codes you mentioned may be false because the test criteria was not met. I would repeat the process you mentioned using the following method (with the engine at normal operating temperature):
a. disconnect the (-) ground cable from the battery for about 30 seconds. This should clear the PCM of trouble codes.
b. Set the parking brake.
c. Shift lever in Park.
d. Start and raise the engine to 2,500 RPM and slowly let the RPM down
to idle.
e. Cycle Air Conditioning briefly On and Off.
f. With your foot on the brake, shift the transmission through all positions
Reverse, Drive , Low etc. finally back to Park and turn off the engine.
This method will allow the compter to obtain any fault codes that might be linked to any of the sensors controlled by the transmission, engine speed or air conditioning system.
g. Do your ignition key routine: ON, OFF, ON, OFF, and finally ON. The trouble codes will now begin to flash.
Let me know what you read, and I'm sure either myself or one of the other forum guys will come up with the meanings.
Alvin

just FYI, the P1684 code, is a chrysler code for disconnecting the battery.
