Hey all, I was wondering if anyone might know whether or not if the coolant temp. on an 88 4runner would prevent the overdrive from engaging. It won't engage unless well warmed up..[sometimes requiring it to sit idling for a while untill 5 volts shows to tranny..then it works great]...does this sound familiar to anybody? thanks....Tim

In short...yes
Change out faulty thermostat and it should fix it....might say oh thank god I saved 1,000.00-3,000.00 and treat it to a nice fluid and tansmission filter change lol

Thanks Forrest, I just picked it up for $2000 has a toyota crate motor installed by the dealership 100k ago and a/c works great,no rust, barely wheeled. The OD problem is all I could find wrong with it.

You're welcome and congrats on doing your homework and your new addition to your stables....trannies cost between 1,000.00 and 3,500.00 and with that milage I would be sure to change fluid and filter in it and just for kicks drop in a good transmission additive like Lucas(available at autozone and other parts stores)it seals, conditions and helps prevent burning fluid due to slippage...I know quite a few people this product has saved from having to go get their tranny rebuilt by doing a fluid & filter change topped off with it....goodluck and enjoy the new ride bud
