there is a release under the stearing column. there is a round plastic cover that you pop off and put a screwdriver up in it to depress the release while turning the key

This seems to be just a temporary fix. Anyone had it repaired and find out what the permanent one is?

yep, don't abuse your shifter by slamming it in park

So what are saying, that it's happening because of the switch in the shifter?

No, saying that if you SLAM your shifter into Park (or as job worded it "shove it <shifter> hard into park") things are liable to go wrong when they get abused. GM never designed shifters to be "shoved hard into park" if you want a more permanant fix, don't abuse it, thats what I'm saying

Understand know?

well your "fix" in my opinion is not a fix. It is a prevention. He needs a fix. The difference is a prevention takes place before soemthing happens. A Fix happens afterwards.

He has a problem. He does not need to prevent it from happening because it already happened. So if your gonna post something please post it correctly.

I'd like a real answer too instead of a snide reply. My wife's '97 Blazer does the same thing since we bought it and I know we didn't abuse it. Is there a lever or switch or rod or something that can be adjusted? It's got 150k on it so I'm guessing something's worn out?

There's solenoid on the steering column that fails and won't let the key turn to off; Here's a link on how to get to it. It's about a 15 minute job to remove;
