ok...

after replaceing the block on my 1998 tahoe....hooked everything back up.....i hooked up the power to the battery and the starter is staying engaged....making a wining sound..(evenwithout the key being turned)...
i thought it might have been wired backwords....but that does not seem to be the case..

i disconcted the power to the satrter and kept the power to the cylanoid and turned the key and it is engaging like it is supposed too...
but every time i connect to power to the starter is has direct power somehow and stays on....

is my starter bad...or could it be sumthing else...please help.....THANKS

...LATE......

I recently worked on starter problem on 1997 and am an electrical engineer.

The solenoid has two large terminals. One connect to battery cable, the other is a jumper to the starter motor.

From what you have described, it is possible that you connected the battery to the motor terminal ? This would provide power to motor independent of solenoid. Allowing something to connect these terminals, such as the lugs on the cable, would accomplish same thing. "This is most likely." The lug can turn as you tighen the nut.

From what you desribed, starter is not engaging the flywheel. I assume this would only happen if you put ignition key into start position to engage solenoid.

If nothing is visibly wrong I would pull it and take to auto electrical shop. It is unlikely, but the solenoid terminals could be shorted internally. Solenoid may be replacable.

Take a close look at the battery cable as it attaches to the starter..if the cable is turned and touching the soleniod terminal it will cause what you are describing

thanks for the suggestions....but i think i ran into a even bigger problem.....

??what year did they start using a crank shaft scensor on 350 engines??

i think i have a useless block in there right now...
or does anyone know a way to bypass it??
