I have a 91 cherokee and it starts for about 3 seconds and runs perfectly and then dies. It will continue to start like this for as you wanted or until you kill the battery

any suggestions.

kill the battery? if you unhook the battery, it dies? what is your voltmeter reading?

If I tried to start it for 15-20 times, then it would drain the battery down(normal). The point I was trying to make is that it would start and run for 3 second and run normally and then stall. It would continue to act this way for ever if I continued.

is it carb. or fuel injection?

It is fuel injection

Possibly the fuel pump is primed enough to run for 3 seconds, then it dies. Try a cheap fix, replace the fuel filter. On my 93, it's located under the driver's side in back next to the fuel tank. It's about the size of a coke can.

Thanks, about 8 months ago I had the same problem and I did replace the fuel filter and it didn't make any difference. Two days later I tried to start the jeep and then it worked fine until now. It is probably time to replace the fuel filter anyway and you never know it could be as easy as that

ok when you first start does it let you accell for just one sec then dies and if you dont accel it'll stay idling for a few ? i had that poroblem and it was a falty TPS sensor my meka said but he said he replaced it under the car and my 89 limited 's tps is ontop of the engine i think. But he said it's under the car and he said he replaced it and now the car runs fine

My 89 Cherokee just did the same thing. If they haven't changed anything since that model, look on the driver side fender wall for a large resistor imbedded in a ceramic block. I was told this was used on lots of vehicles - I remember my Dad's old Dodge had it when I was groing up. Anyway, all I had to do was clean the terminals and it started fine after that, you may have to replace it if it is bad. I am told it is safe for a short period to jump it and see if it will start.

Well Rem.xp100 you were right - the ceramic block was the problem, I bypassed it and it works perfect. thanks a million

My dad has a 91 cherokee limited and have the problem of stalling. Today we were crusing at 50 mph and it just died. So we coasted into someones drive way and turned it off. After about 4 trys to restart it finally does.
We also tried to restart when it died. (Still moving and in neutral) That didn't work. We check for the fuel pump. My dad says that one problem could be the fuel pump motor coming on but no spinning the tube to force fuel into the engine. Another is the crank sensor which still has to be checked or replaced. Then it could be bad spark plugs. We'll have to see
