How can I bypass my NSS switch to see if it is hte problem that I am having, it seems that it is goin out. My reverse lights do not work and many times my Jeep will not start, nothing, no turn over.

go to jeepin.com there is a great write up on the NSS cleaning there. Its very simple to do. also to test it when it wont start put it in neutral and see if it starts there.

thanks for the NSS switch articles. I took it apart and one of the contacts was stuck in the down position. Cleaned it all up and put it back on. Starting without any problems and my backup lights work again.

David, was it a big job, my reverse lights don't work and I know I have to do the same, I have 89 4.0 auto, trans, will fluid be leaking out as well?

It was not difficult, except for the part of removing and reinstalling the NSS switch. You think it's never going to come off but keep moving and pulling on it and it will give eventually. No trainy fluid comes out, it's a clean job.

Hardest part of the job is getting the switch off- before prying at it- spread the threaded shaft a little with a very small screwdriver (the part the nut threads to is cut into four) then thread the retaining nut on a few threads and pry under that to the tranny pan lip.
