Not quite sure what the gas smell could be. I used to have a v6 3.8 firebird. And just before I got rid of it, it started to do that too. Might be something with the fuel line or maybe the fuel cap, ie maybe one that needs replacement. I noticed one day looking closer at where I put in the nozzle to fill up the gas in the car, it looked like fumes or vapors were going up and down the little metal door. I don't remember where I read it, but I thought I read somewhere that this was not a good thing and could be the source of the bad gas smell. If I remember right, replacing the gas tank cap, and tank itself are the fix, but I will tell you right now, replacing the tank is an absolutely frustrating thing. I have not done it myself, but just looking at the diagram was just frustrating enough!

every time that i fill up my 95 i have a problem with gas sloshing out and down the side of my car (bad gas cap i imagine). so for about 50 miles or so my car smells like gas, including the interior. i also have a buddy that installed an amplifier into his camaro and he screwed the amp into his gas tank. that was an expensive mistake. if you have screwed anything down in the trunk you might check that out.
