96 Dodge won't stay running and idles roughidspud26 12-27-2004, 09:05 PM My 1996 Dodge RAM 1500 won't stay running when you first start it until you rev it up a little for a minute or two, and after it is nice and warm and you stop it idles low and erratically and acts like it wants to die. Have replaced plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires and ran them one at a time so they would be ran just like before. Please help. indyram 12-28-2004, 01:00 AM Could be a lot of things. Not getting enough gas, bad air/fuel mix, map sensor. Is it kicking on any check engine lights? BleedDodge 12-28-2004, 01:41 AM Throttle position sensor probably, since you have to keep your foot on it. If it idles low and wants to die like you say, it could also be the idle air control valve. I think what I would do is take the IAC off and clean it, put it back on and see if there's a difference. If it works for a little while then that's probably what your problem was. Then just replace the IAC valve for good measure. I dunno. idspud26 12-28-2004, 10:46 AM Thanks for the ideas I will try them and no I am not getting any check engine lights. Tuffdrvr88 12-28-2004, 02:21 PM This may seem obvious but make sure you replace your air and fuel filter. danwilliams 12-28-2004, 03:20 PM Recently I had 2 fuel injectors go bad in my '99 RAM 3500. The symptoms were the same as you describe. They were 85 bucks a piece! Now, I have another gone bad. However, when it first went out it was very intermittent. Also the check engine light didn't go off right away. It took 2 bad ones to do it. Tuffdrvr88 12-28-2004, 08:02 PM Does it always run rough, or is it just an occasional thing? idspud26 12-29-2004, 01:36 AM I think it is fixed I took out the IAC and cleaned it and seems to have fixed the problem thanks. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
