Hi, I have a 93 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0, and I recently found an oily spot in the driveway. This thing never leaked before, so I waited for a warmer day to crawl under to take a look. This is my hunting truck, so it is not my daily driver. Today was warmer, so I slid under and found it dripping from the back of the oil pan, and it smelled like oily gas. Most of the original spot had evaporated. I then popped the hood, and saw what looked like oil sitting on top of the valleys in the rear sections of the intake manifold. When I took a rag to clean it up, I was certain that it was fuel, with a slight bit of oil (the oil could have been some disolved crud buildup from around the valve cover gasket). It looks like the problem could have come from the rear cylinders, as that's where the gas pools were. I did not try to start it or anything else until I tried to get an answer fron one of you Gurus. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.!

Hi It sounds like you may have a leaking fuel injector, they hav o-ring seals on them. It may have a cracked o-ring seal and fuel is leaking from it on to the intake manifold area. i wouldn't try starting it till you find out what is causing the leak. you could clean the area then turn key on and see if you can see where it is leaking from. If its at the rear on maniflod it is probably # 5-6 injector. donot start questions jeepman600@aol.com Dale

yup leaky injector the oring kit cost about $10 and are easy to replace just make sure you use some lube to put them back in so they dont rip when installing them. Also I had two injectors that were cracked and I bought 8 ford mustang 5.0 19pound injectors for $89. which is almost what the parts store wanted for one. I bought mine from kar-kraft.com (i think) also five0 motorsports should have them too.

Thanks for the info Dale and Bucky. I cleaned up the area the best that I could and turned the key. The #5 injector was wet after about 5 minutes, but not sure where it is leaking from the top o-ring or the injector itself. Any ideas? I have never tackled a job like this before, but it looks like it is pretty easy. Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.

just make sure that you have no fuel pressure in the system before you take it apart.take out the fuel pump relay and try to run it until it dies then crank it to make sure.

there is a rail bleeder valve on the fuel rail looks like a tire valve put a rag under that until no more fuel comes out. Then disconnect the fuel lines from the rail then 4 (i think) bolts on top of intake manifold and pull rail off. it will take some pulling but pull evenly aross the rail to make sure not to damage it. Next replace lower orings and take the clips off the top to take injectors off rail. Then make sure you lube them good before putting them back in (I used ky jelly but oil will work. then do everything in reverse. Hope that helps.

I recently had all six injectors replaced (at $117.00 a pop, I *really* wished the fuel injector talk had happened earlier) and a problem that developed after the fact was the O ring between the Fuel Pressure Regulator and the fuel rail developed a leak. I suppose physically disturbing a comprimised mechanical seal pushed it over the edge. I ended up replacing it with an O ring I found in one of those "Help!" blister packs you find in the auto parts stores. (The pack contained about 10 O rings, were made of Viton and was about $7.00)
If possible, perhaps changing that O ring out while you have the system apart will prevent you from having to do it later on...
