My 1989 Jeep Cherokee is a basic strip model with a strait 6 engine. The problem started recently when you turn it over it fires while the key is turned and the started is going, but then dies. If I hold it on long enouph the engine eventually stays running. Only to die suddenly while warming up or down the road while driving. Took it in and the crankshaft position sensor was replaced and they wanted 200 more for the wires, plugs, cap and rotor. I did those myself. The problem didnt get fixed and has gotten progressively worse. I used soapy solution on the vaccum lines to see if there was a leak which could affect the vaccum assist fuel pump. Not a bubble. Could it be my coil or some other computer do-dad. What the crap is wrong with it. Dumb, mechanics up here always scamming. They said they ran a diagnostic? I called but my girl took it in. Not her fault, but mechanics scam women like that sometimes. If you have any clue what it could be email me at forester6779@hotmail.com. Put "ATTENTION JEEP ANSWERS HERE" in the title, I have a junk filter at high. Thanks
HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
hopefully mine isnt on the side of the road.

Did you check the fuel pressure? Should be around 31lbs. Also could be the coil, cam position sensor located in the distributor. One thing on Cherokees is the fuel pump balast resistor located on the drivers side fender. Try running a jumper wire across the terminals to see if solves your problem. Does your check engine light come on? Might give some insight to the problem.

Ditto what Cam said. By the way, soapy water does not make bubbles on vacuum lines.

Check the fuel pump lines as well.
