'98 Intrepid has intermittent start problem

At times I will turn the ignition key on '98 Intrepid and get no start-up. Lights come on but no ignition. If I turn the key to auxiliary and back the gear shift to neutral (or anything else) then back to park and try the ignition again, it will work. Any idea what is going on? The same problem occurred with my '93 Intrepid.

sounds like your transmission range sensor is acting up.

kegenes:
It could be in the Shift/Ignition Interlock, do you have a Column or Floor Shift model?

It is an automatic transmission with the optional 3 speed "manual". Gear shift is a center mounted console between the front seats. Is that "Column" or "Floor Shift"?

It's considered a floor shifter. There is a cable adjustment at the base of the shifter.
Your narrative indicates to me the adjustment is marginal, since you can repeat the process and it works. Sometimes we are a little too gentle in placing the shifter in 'Park' and this will occur. To adjust the cable requires removing the Shift lever, Center Console, and Steering Column covers. Unless this becomes a cronic problem I would leave it alone, and try being a little more positive in putting the shifter in Park.
