Cold Starts

I am new to the forum, and appreciate the help I've received so far. I'm wondering how long I should let my 90 LeSabre(3800) warm up for before driving? I've heard all kinds of different theories but I would like to know the correct procedure for cold winter starts. Also, how much does the oil play into this? I've heard thicker oil or synthetic is best for the winter. Any thoughts? Thanks Again!

my option - most of the time i start the car and drive it cold, unless it is EXCESSIVELY cold. my reasons are the following
1. warming in park only warms the engine, not the transmission, driveline, wheel, suspention, ect. it takes approx. 7 miles to warm everything up on average.
2. the engine warms up better under load.
3. a cold engine idling with no load will not atomize the fuel fully, and over time cause fuel puddling in the intake and carbon build-up.
4. multiwieght oil is designed to work the same cold as it is hot(however synthetic does do a better job then dyno oil when cold)
5. the thermostat(assuming it is working properly) will block the coolent to radiator when the engine is cold weather its moving or not.

however, when the engine is cold i do not race or rev the engine, keep it easy until the engine has warmed up.
