blower motor

Today my blower motor suddenly stopped working. I checked all fuses and they were all good, I took it to a local mechanic who recently worked on the car to get some quick advice. He looked around and then pounded on the blower motor a couple times and it started right up. The temperature today has gone from minus 5 to 20 above(fahrenheit). He said it had seized and would need replacement. Does this sound right, or could it have just failed due to the extremely cold weather?

The fact that the motor ran after striking it means it is not seized. It's more likely that you have a poor ground (possibly by the extreme temperatures - metal expands/contracts). If it fails again, you could rig a ground wire from the blower motor casing to a good ground point on the engine and see if this solves the problem.

This may be a stupid question, but what exactly do I need to do to run a new ground wire? Basically I'm wondering what type of wire to use and also, where exactly to connect it. The heater quit again tonight and it is once again well below zero. If it ever warms up to at least 25 or 30 I am going to try this. Thanks again.

I had the exact problem and I just changed the motor. For $65, it was well worth it, especially this time of year!

Since I ran a new ground wire it has been working fine(knock on wood). Although I may look into it further this summer. Thanks again to all for the help.
