Need Help Plz Cherokee starts and then OFFfar_903 12-19-2004, 11:14 PM Hey Guys I have a 88 cherokee 4.0, it gives problems while starting it. If I hold the key all the way, it starts and the engine keeps on running and if I let the key go it stops. I can start it any time but it stops if I let the key go and if I let the key go very slowly it sometimes keeps on running. I replaced the Ignition switch by the lower steering column and also ordered a Neutral Safety Switch and have read few message boards and came to learn about CPS. I need your help. Any advice or suggestions!!!!! I WILL GREATLY APPRECIATE 89ltd 12-20-2004, 08:09 AM I don't think its the nss, as it would not turn over at all, I had the same thing happen to my 89, when I let the key go, the fuel pump stopped getting power. Check the fuel pump relay and also the start signal wire from the starter relay to the ecu. 89ltd 12-20-2004, 08:43 AM I would cancel the nss as they are very expensive, and try this rebuild first, my switch is bad too , no reverse lights but when I get the time , I'm going to follow this link http://www.lunghd.com/Downloads_and_Links/Downloads.htm far_903 12-20-2004, 11:19 AM Thanks man I will cancel the nss order and will work on my jeep after xmas and I will post, if still any problems with starting. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Happy Holidays!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dale Aeppli 12-20-2004, 06:25 PM Thanks man I will cancel the nss order and will work on my jeep after xmas and I will post, if still any problems with starting. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Happy Holidays!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.jeepin.com/features/nss/index.asp check this site for cleaning of nss switch dale jeepman600@aol.com fergmonster 12-21-2004, 10:21 AM sounds like an ignition switch...... Ironic 12-21-2004, 11:39 AM The nss does not have anything to do with keeping the Jeep running- its only purpose is to prevent starting (cranking) in any drive gear, and provide back-up lights. It does sound like the ignition switch, or the linkage inside the column coming off the switch. But no way is it the nss. Saudade 12-21-2004, 03:01 PM Did this start to happen after you changed the switch? The switch has small slotted holes where the screws attach. You may need to loosen them and re-align the switch. far_903 12-22-2004, 11:12 AM thank you guys for all your help. Fergmonster I did replace the Ignition switch but no luck. Suadade,I had this problem before i replaced the switch and when I replaced the switch I did adjust it, it worked fine few times after installation but next day same problem. Dale, Ironic, Suadade and Fergmonter you guys have alot of info on your hands I appreciate you all sharing with me now and hopefully in future also. Saudade 12-22-2004, 11:53 AM When you release the key and the engine stops, do your accessories, like radio, lighter, wipers, etc, still work? Despite having change the switch already, I suspect it may be bad too. Check the key lock cylinder as well. far_903 12-22-2004, 03:59 PM I tried to open up the key cylinder but found no screws on the coloumn under the steering. Do I need to pull the steering out to get to Key cylinder??? And how can I pull the steering out do i need any special tool.?? Saudade 12-22-2004, 06:48 PM You'll need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate remover. Autozone has these for free loan. You should check other local stores. What about the accessories? far_903 12-22-2004, 10:27 PM Yes the accessories and all lights work. It starts fine but shuts down when key is released. far_903 12-31-2004, 10:53 PM Hey Guys I finally nailed the problem. It was a faulty relay(4 relays in row by passenger seat). Thanks !!!! Saudade 01-01-2005, 11:29 AM Good Catch. Thanks for the feedback! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
