1991 525i NO HEADLIGHTS (CAN'T SEE) :-(Gage308 12-19-2004, 06:24 AM Hello- I REALLY Hope someone can help me….I just bought a Very Nice BMW 525i 1991…in SUPER shape….It runs great,,,then….ALL OF A SUDDEN while driving home last night…My HEADLIGHTS CUT OUT!!!!!!!!…I pulled over…the parking lights were still on… ALL The interior lights worked, inst cluster, etc…But the Low and High beams wouldn’t work… The Foglamps wouldn’t work either…which is stange they are a totally different switch…I checked ALL the fuses and they were fine. I removed the relays?…I guess they were relays…in the same Box as all the fuses…well ANYWAY…after about an hour of crying and being mad ..I decided to get in the car and drive home anyway…WELL the LIGHTS WORKED!!!!…came home…went outside a while later andthe lights WOULDN’T work again….I just cannot figure it out…Maybe a bad switch?…But that doesn’t explain the foglamps not working…Unless they are wired so that they cannot be operated UNLESS the lights were on…which NOW that Im thinking about it.,..that is probably right//////OK…well If anyone can help me/….you would REALLY make My Christmas a lot better…. Thanks Don kakie 12-19-2004, 05:50 PM I just bought the same model. The previous owner described this same problem and had the headlight module replaced. That did the job. bennya 12-19-2004, 08:50 PM I just bought the same model. The previous owner described this same problem and had the headlight module replaced. That did the job. I have a similar problem with a 94 525i I am new to BMW could you please tell us where to find this module for I am certain this is the same problem Benny kakie 12-19-2004, 11:18 PM The previous owner had it replaced at an independent BMW mechanic shop. not dealer affiliated. Gage308 12-20-2004, 12:05 AM Thanks for the advice...actually i was trouble shooting it ALL day....I took the fuse box apart to fget a better look...I bought one of the repair manuals but when I got it out of the shrinkwrap and looked up the part about the headlight relays etc...It Just had a picture of EXACTLY what you see under the hood and a sub quote something like" these are relays////there they are...yup"....SO. the book sucks....I see 6 little cube relays... a few other small ones.....a MEDIUM sized rectangle thing that said "12-v check control"...and then a Big one...about AS wide as the fuse box itself...i dont know WHAT it is...But it said LKM-L.....---U.S.A......I actually wiggled THAT around...and it actually made the lights come on a few times...I pulled it up slightly and wedged a piece of foam beside it...and the Lights actually stayed on for a while...I found that driving for a while...Then if the lights cut out...they WILL not come back on by flipping the light switch off...then on.....But MOST Of the time...if you turn off the light switch turn ON the ignition THEN the lightswitch the lighst would come on....NOT EVERY TIME,...But Most....They actually stayed on ALL the way back to my house(20 min)...but earlier while slowing for a redlight they cut out...i did my procedure///they came on,....for 5 seconds then Boom ...off...THEN I actually COULDNT get the lights to come back on....so I got out and wiggled the BIG rectangular thing pulling it up slightly...THEN It worked...I'll TELL YA WHAT!!!....with THIS and the fact the RADIO NEEDS A DAMN CODE...That I DONT HAVE....MY WEEKEND SUCKED .....IN A HUGE WAY....LOL 18bob14 12-22-2004, 07:18 AM I had the same problem with my '91 525. Using a web page (www.bmwe34.net) I fixed the LKM module without a problem. What happens is there are 4 relays within the LKM module. Overtime, the soldered joints for the relays become 'dry'. This means that the electric can't flow and your lights don't work. If you're confident, you can remove the LKM box (big, rectangular, black, plastic box) from the car and open it up carefully. Using a soldering iron, heat up each of the relay soldered joints on the back of the circuit board. You may need to add a bit more solder to each. The fix takes a bit of time but is basically free as opposed to approx £400 sterling for a new unit. Please check the named site first as this has considerably more detail concerning the fix. If you're not confident with a soldering iron, ask a friend or helpful electrician to do it with reference to the site. Hope this helps Goathumper 01-14-2005, 10:36 PM yea, the same thing happened to me. I just added a little bit of solder to the relay connections and the problem disappeared. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
