Anyone know the timing for an 88 Cherokee, 4.0, 5 speed, 4 wheel drive?

What are the indications of a bad module?

the module gets info from the sync sensor in the distributer and from the crank sensor in the on the top of the trans bell housing driver's side. I would think if you had a bad module, you would have problems starting or stauling, I think I may have a bad one because it cranks over forever before starting. What type of problems are you having?

I was originally looking to advance the timing a little so I could get a little more power going up the mountain to get home. This is where I still have an overheating prob.

is your electric fan coming on quick enough?

Yes. The electric fan comes on around 200 degrees. The radiator has been replaced. The water pump has been replaced. The thermostat has been replaced with a 180 degree with an air bleed hole. The fan clutch has been replaced. The coolant reservoir and cap have been replaced. Just had the system "vaccuumed" to remove all possible air. That helped some around town but it still overheated coming up the mountain.

do you hear any pinging or knocking when going up the hill?

Don't hear any.

You sure have things covered with all the new parts, how high is your gauge going, does it run hot on level ground as well, before I forget, this link will give you a factory shop manual for the 88, I use it for my 89, don't know if you have it yet.

The guage goes into the red. I pull over and wait for it to cool down and then I go again.

has the jeep always done this, I have bought bad therastats before, now I put them in water on the stove and heat them up before installing them to make double sure that they will open at the correct temp.

Even ran it without the thermostat.

have you always had an over heating problem or did it start suddenly? Is there anything to indicate that you could have a blown head gasket? Was there anyother work done lately?

Did a block check and it was OK. These things are the only things done.

I have to go down the hill now and I dread the thought of the drive back home.

one thing that will help in a bind is to turn your heater on full with blower on high, works like another rad, I 'm really lost with this one, I know of some one that had over heating problems resulting from dragging rear brakes causing the engine to work harder, maybe somebody else will have idea's. It is a very poorly designed cooling system to begin with. Some people have changed the whole system.

The first couple of weeks I had the Jeep it ran a little warm but nothing like this. One day it boiled over, blew the coolant reservoir, and It's been running too hot since.

My understanding is that the only reason to change the system is to eliminate the air lock problem. Well, I've had the system vaccuumed to remove all of the possible air.
