Air bag light and reminder

On my 99' GCL (136,000 mi.), the air bag light and chime comes on every 10-30-60 minutes, then the light and chime goes away.

The dealer ran some electrical hook-up and said, it's a "scribe" and will cost about $196 to replace.

The air bag itself is fine.

What's a scribe? Is this item or the problem fixed myself like replacing a burnt-out light bulb?

Are you sure that they didn't say "squib"?the most common thing is the clockspring.Basically the squib means the circuit to the airbag itself.the most common code is "driver squib open" and the most common cause is the clockspring. You have to take the steering wheel off to replace it and you will have a hard time if you don't have the right puller. It doesn't use the common steering wheel puller with bolts that thread into it.

Okay, thanks for the correction, that was mostly likely it, i just heard it wrong and spelled it that way. Is that steering wheel puller found at most auto stores or a dealer purchased item?

Is there a site that gives us a detailed blow-up of parts and maybe their prices, anyone?

the puller is made by miller and the number isc-3894-a.other than ordering directly from miller.I don't know where you would get one. It's also used as a tie rod puller on other chrysler vehicles so if you had something like that it should work.

I have the same issue with my 99, but the mechanic quoted me over 400 dollars because of having to disconnect the airbag. Does this sound right? Is there a way to make it stop dinging for now so I don't rip my hair out? I have to fix my 75 blazer and 03 sunfire before I can tackle this one!!
