whining or rubbing noise from transfer case

I have been experiencing a rather annoying noise from the transfer case area, in my 93 jgc v8 quadtrac, i can feel the vibration in the 4wd handle, and if i move it just an 1/2 inch or so in any direction it gets worse. my local trans. shop said it could be the linkage in the case loose and hitting the case, any other ideas before i change it out. also anyone have a link that shows the removal and replacement procedure of the trans case.
thanks much.

When does this happen, in gear or inbetween neutral and reverse? These models had a problem with niose resinating from the transmission. there is a recall on it, though I don't think its grandfathered. I worked on a freinds that did this. changed the fluid and filter and the sound went away. Also you might try changing the T-case fluid, I used synthetic, worked great.

this does this at speeds around 20 mph and over you can feel it in the shift lever for the 4wd, comes and goes. when you hear it you can feel the jeep pull to one side and when making a slow speed sharp turns the front ends hopes like in low range. it seems like it takes more throttle than normal and guzzles the gas.

the 249 is not exactly the tcase of choice. very problematic.
