Hey guys, well im trying to find 350 engine and bore it over. Im planning on building a 383 stroker. I was just wondering, if its really wise for me to be building one on my own. I always have people tell me that you need to get computer balanced right and blah blah. Its going to cost a shit load of money. Im ready for all the parts I need and Im pretty sure I can do it. Just is 383 alot harder to build becuase of all the special parts or should I just stop being a pussy and just do it.

-Any harsh remarks you want to put out is fine with me.
-Thanks Peace!

Yeah, you should just go ahead and do it. I have a friend who redid his, it came out fuckin sweet. the only thing that's giving him problems are the gaskets sometimes. he did a lot of it him self with a little help and fucked a few things up but it looks, souds, and runs clean as hell. if you need a block, i'm selling my 1973 350 for $300. i don't have the money to overhaul it right now

Your best bet would be to let the machine shop do it.. there is alot more to building a 383 stroker then slapping a 400 crank into a 350 and boring it 30 over. Your going to have to get the block notched because of the longer stroke crank. The main journals on a 400 crank is .265 and the main journals on a 350 are .245. You can either buy an actual stroker crank, or get a 400 small block crank turned .200 to fit the journals. Everything has to be Mic'ed and all the clearances have to be checked. The figure boring the block at around 50 bucks a hole. If I were you, I would bring the mahine shop your block, rods, crank, pistons, etc. (basically the entire bottom half of the motor) and tell them to do all the necessary machine work and put it together. Then you put the top end of the motor together. Just my :2cents:

Edit: I found a site to answer alot of questions for you:

http://www.chevymania.com/tech/383.htm

They answer alot of the common 383 stroker questions there.

you can get a wicked crate motor oil pan to carb for cheaper than you can build a long block.do the math.
