I have a 96 Grand Cherokee and when I was changing my oil last week I noticed a Vaccuum hose hanging below the radiator. I do not have a Chilton's and I am not sure where the vaccuum hose should be connected to. I traced it back to where its coming from and its coming from the front gearbox on the front axle for the 4 wheel drive. Do you know where this vaccuum line should be attached to? Thanks!!! Any ideas? It comes out of the rear side of the gear box and heads toward the driver side of the radiator?

There is a vacuum canister behind the front bumper on passenger side that is probably where it is from. Its hard to see up there but its a round plastic ball with vacuum lines on it. Its for the four wheel drive system. You'll just have to check behind front bumper, If you want you can remove the plastic housing on the pass. side headlight, and remove the headlight assembly to see into the area. questions holler Dale jeepman600@aol.com

Thanks Dale,
I also received this response
" The vacuum hose you are referring to is for the front differential it is just abreather hose, I know that vacuum hose gets attached to the side of the Air Cleaner box (there are 3 lil clips that hold it up so that water and dirt cannot get into it) on the ZJ equipped with the 5.2L engine but I am not positive on 4.0L engine, it may be in the same location."

I will check after work today, thank you both!

That is possible the breather for my 97 4.0 comes up right under the master cylinder has a white plastic check valve to keep debri out. just find breather on the axle housing and follow it. Dale

Dale, the Vaccuum line does not have a white tip on it (I guess it could have feel off). The line is about 36 inches long and is about a quarter inch in diameter, it starts from the rear side of the front gear box.

checkt to see if you have the vacuum hose on Master cylinder (like dale said) this is prolly where it needs to go.

The hose is attached to the side of the airbox. The clips hold the line in the shape of an upside-down U. It is not a vacuum line, it is a breather for the differential therefore the end stays open.

Thanks for all of the information, I didn't find anything around the master cyclinder, but did find the 3 brackets that will hold the line next to the air box, thanks CTCarpenter and everyone else!
