Hi, guys the car has only 76,000 miles on it and the oil pan gasket is leaking fairly heavily in the front (around the timing cover). I know that it is not the front seal as it is dry up there. I have the Haynes manual that states you have to pull the trans to replace the oil pan gasket. Are their any workarounds to pulling the trans? I have a large selection of tools to do the job (MY father and I restore classic cars) and keep maintenance up on five other vehicles. PLease let me know if their is any other way to replace this gasket without having the pull the trans. Thanks in advance

Are you SURE it is the pan? The cast pans don't tend to leak unless all the bolts are loose, and then leak all the way around. Make sure it isn't the intake leaking down to the pan lip, following a seam around.

Got the same problem in a 94 APV.

Can I get to the oil pan by removing the motor mounts on top and jacking up the trans like I do to change the plugs? There's a cross frame in the way of the bolts.

Seems to be the pan, I checked today and it is wet all around. The back is leaking fairly heavily itself. I pulled the plastic flexplate cover off and the flexplate and torque converter were dry, so I am asuming the pan gasket in the rear is leaking and not the rear main seal. I checked all the bolts for tightness and they were as tight as could be. The intake gaskets(upper and lower), valve cover gaskets, valve cover grommets, and O-ring for oil pump drive all have been replaced There are no leaks from these areas. Please let me know if their is anyway to replace this pan gasket without removing the trans (4T60-E btw). Thanks in advance

why would you have to pull the trans for an engine oil pan gasket???

The reason that I asked the question is that the Haynes manual stated that the transmission has to be removed in order to allow clearance for the rear of the oil pan. Thanks

If I remember correct the pan has a 1 piece rubber gasket. You can drop the pan enough to get the old gasket off and the new 1 on.

yes, the pan gasket is one piece - good luck with that one.
