I bought a 94 grand cherokee with 165k. I did a very stupid thing which was not checking the trany fluid. About 9 months later it began slaming in and out of gear when stoping at lights. I checked the fluid and found that it was 3 qts. low. I was quoted $1500-$2500 to have it rebuilt and they said it was to complicated for me to even take out the trany myself to save some $. Is it really that hard or are they just trying to make more $?. I have done several trany swaps but nothing computer controled. I asked them about getting a used trany and they said it was difficult to get the right one and the computer might not recognize it. I need a cheap salution. Please help. :banghead:

Is it a 4.0 or 5.2?Either one is not that hard to take out if you have the right tools and equipment. As for the computer part,on a 5.2 the computer has nothing to do with it except for tcc and overdrive,on a 4.0,the computer doesn't do much,it just controls governor pressure in addition to tcc and overdrive.Either one has only 2 electrical connections on the trans itself and one is for the neutral safety/back-up light switch.Assuming its 4wd,the worst thing is that the t-case makes it a little more work but if you have done trans swaps before, you probably can handle this.
