2001 Jimmy short?

Hi,
I have a 2001 Jimmy (70K miles) and the past week it's been giving me trouble - sometimes it'll start great, sometimes I have to say a hail Mary first. When I turn the key in the ignition, the tow/haul button is activated, and the rear hatch is opened. If I keep my foot on the gas for about 10 min, sometimes it's OK. Otherwise I drive with one foot on gas, the other on the brake. I can't figure if it's a short in the system, a starter problem or what. It's barely cranking when I turn the key, and I have to catch it just righ to start it.
Hopefully someone else has had this problem and can enlighten me?
I'm new to the area I live in, and don't want to get fleeced by a garage. I'd rather have a good idea of what it is before I go in.
Thanks,
Kathy

Ignition switch in the steering column, replace it.

Turns out it was just the battery.

Me too. LOL After the tow, it was an expensive battery. Next time I'll know to try and jump it first.
