Front wheel bearings

I have a 92 Z34,I started heariring what sounds like a grinding or howling coming from my front end,I'm pretty sure it's wheel bearings.I know my way around cars can do most all repairs myself but I never did bearings .Was wondering is it hard to do and how is it done.Is it something I can do in my driveway.Also I stumbled on to this site about 4 months ago,so far I have found many helpful tips and ways to fix my car.So I decided to join maybe I might be able to return the help .Thanks in advance.

ARE YOU SURE its the wheel bearings ??? Ok do this take it down the road at a speed where it makes the noise and the turn the steering wheel a little to the left and the to the right does the noise stay the same or change if it stays the same its not the wheel bearings if it changes it is. ON put the brakes on does the noise change

When I turn the wheel the sound does not change,but now that you mentioned it when I put my foot on the brake the noise goes away.

Probably the wonderful dragging calipers then.

Bingo pulled of the wheel today right front caliper only has one cylinder working must have just happened,I changed my pads about two months ago and there was no problem.YIPPI now I get to replace calipers what a pain in the butt they are I hate bleeding brakes.Thanks guys.

I've also been having a problem with noises comming from my wheels recently. Except mine is a definite scraping sound and only happens around 60kph. The sound is not constant, it has a fequency. Pressing the brakes does not affect it. Do you guys think this could be the bearings? I'll do the stearing test when I run some erands in an hour or so. Hope it's easy to fix, cause I don't have a garage and it's -10C outside now :(.

How much does a set of bearings cost for the front?

The only ammount I could find was $92.00 on autozone.com, but that doesn't seem right. I thought that bearings were alot cheaper (at least from what I've heard)...Anyone know how much they run?

That's about right, actually. Because the bearings are sealed units, you get the whole assembly. I think the last customer we did a set of fronts for was $350 something, including labor.

Yeah, the hub bearing on a FWD car is considerably larger and more complex than the old wheel bearings you are used to.

It press fits into the spindle, so you have to have a shop press them in. You probably could figure a way to do it yourself, but I wouldn't reccomend it. Would suck to ruin a $100 bearing.
