I own a 1992 525i E34 with over 180,000miles. Engine light came on; w/in 24 hours, rpm fluctuates 500 to 1100 & back continuously at idle but when I accelerate, all is ok; w/in 48 hours, rpm 500 to 1100 at idle but the moment I touch the gas pedal, rpm bottoms out and engine nearly dies; has been going on now for 1 week; have replaced engine oil/filter, transmission fluid, and fuel filter. Now checking into air filter, oxygen sensor and plugs. This car has not had careful attention in over 5 years so all needs doing anyway; engine oil changed regularly but that's about it. Help

sounds like a loose vacuum hose/ vacuum leak or IAC Idle Air Control valve (think that is what it is called)

Did you find your problem? My automatic tranny is popping out of gear in 4th an I read something about the RPM sensor causing the problem.

Please let me know how you fixed the problem.

I also was talking with my tranny mechanic and said the Torque Converter Solenoid in the tranny will cause your engine to quit or will shake the car at idle if it goes bad. Therefore, I'm interested in how you fixed your problem, because it may help me fix mine.
