My 91 exec 190000 miles, (?) Check enging light is almost always on, after being driven for till warm the light will go out and then the car will cut out but the motor is still running. After pulling over and waiting for a min the car will then respond once again to my foot. After this goes on about every 2 or 3 miles the car will die. Been happening about 2 weeks and just in the last few days will not start once dead. Have to wait till cools a little bit and then will start again. The temp runs as it always has and I was told that maybe the cat converters may be plugged and to pull them off and clean all the filler out of them. After discovering all the bolts on them were to corroded and rusted to get off, I drilled holes in them to clean some of the stuff out of them. Now the car sounds like a 79 chevy 4x4 and still has the running issue. Any advice would be extremely helpful at this point.

This is most likely caused by the EGR groove under the throttle body to get gummed up with carbon and what not. If you have a few hours it's not that difficult to clean out. Be sure to have the codes scanned and it will give you the exact syptom but from what you describe this sounds like the EGR.

IAC can make the car stall out and have been known to fail. It regulates the amount of air the engine uses to stay idle, if it fails the car usually stalls out frequently. No pictures here but if you get the part you can easily identify it in the engine bay, http://www.lincolnsonline.com/article17.html

Alright the cats need to be replaced, no way around it. Unless you like straight pipes that are loud. Drilling the holes is only a temporary solution.

Whats the service history on this car? When was the last tune up (with these items replaced, Spark Plugs, Spark Plug wires, fuel filter, air filter and the coolant being flushed and filled)? Not to sound insulting but this things are very helpful to making the car run decently.

This is all really helpfull, right at the end of this summer I did actually clean out the EGR groove, it was really bad though at that time. As far as the codes I had taken into a mechanic and had the codes read and all they came up with was a sensor that tells the computer how hot the engine was running was out and that got replaced, at least they told me that they did. The tune up, changed spark plugs and wires in Aug., feul filter about two weeks ago and the air filter still looks brand new. However on the codes and I had jumped the computer with a wire this summer and what I got out of those readings was the EGR valve was bad, bought the valve and then coudl not get to the existing one to replace it and gave up. Pretty sad huh? So do you think that coudl be causing me all these problems?
