96 lumina transmission issue

On my way to work this morning my car all of a sudden was unable to accelerate past 15 mph. Pressing the accelerator only reved the engine but I could not go any faster. It has been slipping slightly the last month or so. This is the second time this transmission has done this to me. The other time was about 2 1/2 years ago. Then I had the transmission rebuilt. They also said that the torque converter needed to be replaced.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on whether my tranny is toast, aka needing a new one, or if it is a torque converter issue again, or both.

Since I am not very car savvy, though my brother is good at repairing vehicles (just not so great at diagnosising), and we might not be able to get into a shop to lift the car ourselves to fix it, I will have to have it taken in. In that case I really cant afford to just assume its the transmission again.

Thanks Eric.

Sounds like a 1-2 shift problem, be it solenoid or friction material. If you recently had it rebuilt I'm leaning towards the solenoids. This is a wild stab in the dark however, I'm not Mr. Transmission just yet ;P
