96 GC whinning?????

I had just read in an earlier thread about a whinning noise when accelerating or even idle. I am having this same problem but it has just started since I changed the serpentine belt. I thought that it was maybe just too tight but I have since loosened it and it is still making the noise. It almost sounds like an electric motor running. The other thread had said that it could be the water pump, alt. or power steering pump, how often do these go bad.
thanks

I doubt it would whine if it were too tight - tho it would strain the bearings on all of the pulleys and eventually destroy them. Keep tightening it and see if it goes away. You might be able to borrow a belt tensioner from a shop and check it quick. Does it do it when you are running the AC? Perhaps the AC clutch is the culprit. The power steering pump on my 93' didn't die till I had around 210K miles on mine. Not sure about the water pump tho.

Thanks for the info, I had someone take a look at it and my power steering pump was making alot of noise. I think when I over tightened the belt I may have put too much tork on the power steering and messed up the bearing??? I've replaced the pump and everything seems to be OK so far.

Yeah mine did the same thing before I installed my competition stereo and customized it. The fix was as follows:

The first ime it was the waterpump, and I mean it was bad just sitting there at idle.

Second time was the power stearing pump, now it did thise for 3 weeks before we diagnosed it because my steering was still working fine, just the seals had gone out in it.

So yea, you are probably right and it's one of these components on the main belt line.

Hope this was of some help.......
