Better gas mileage

How do I get better gas mileage out of my '96 Lumina, 3.1 L V? I currently get about 20 miles to the gallon. That gets really expensive when you have to travel an hour to work and back.

starting in 1996 models gm motors can scan a system even if the computor did not trip a code or you can guess and start replacing parts

I don't know how familiar you are with this car, but I commute about 25 miles one way to work without much stop and go and I get about 26 mpg. It goes way down if I am in allot of stop and go traffic.
Anyhow you may want to start with some fuel treatment and be sure your air filter is not too dirty.

I'm not too familiar with this car. I've had her for a little over two years. I know how to tune her up, but not really work on her. I know she's got a few problems, but I'm not sure where to start. I guess the air filter would be the best place since I live in the Texas panhandle. It's really dusty here, and I travel on dirt roads a lot.
Thanks for your responses.

dang, dude, I get roughly 22 in stop and go, I'm happy. There is nothing wrong with my car. (2001 Chevy Lumina)

I get about 19-23 MPG .. 96 Lumina 172.000 miles .. well taken care of. Though this car is now a winter beater while my 2002 Convertible hibernates in the garage until summer.

Might not be a bad idea to replace the o2 sensor.
