2000 JGC Laredo, Starts after second try

Bout 6 months ago my JGC stopped starting on the first try. I never fixed it because it starts on the second try. Now were at the third try and i think its time to do something. My driveway is pretty steep and in the AM i never have trouble. I always thought it was the angle.

A friend owns a dealership and said it was the fuel pump.

Any ideas??

It's possible that it's the fuel pump, but they more often either work or don't work - not the fade-away you're experiencing. Did you check the fuel filter? If it's progressively getting clogged, that might explain it. If that doesn't fix it, then use a fuel pressure gauge to check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail during start up. When the ignition is activated (not necessarily with the starter) - the pump is activated to pressurize the system. If you have an internal leak in the system, then the pressure will ramp up more slowly and will drop quicker after the ignition is deactivated. A bad internal pump seal could cause that (my buddy's 97' TJ did that). However, it could also be a bad fuel pressure regulator (located near the front of the fuel rail) or clogged fuel lines.

In the event that your fuel pressure is fine, it could be electrical in which case you might want to consider checking the voltage at the fuel pump connector to verify that you're getting 12 V right when the ignition is activated. If this is not the case then that's likely the problem. Otherwise you might consider other electrical components such as the ignition coil, etc.. Good Luck

look more toward the Camshaft Position Sensor (Distributor Pick-up), there is a magnet that detects Cam position and it sometimes gets dislodged and will act like this.

the WJ fuel pumps have alot of problems with losing pressure when it sits. This could possibly be the problem or as dks mentioned possibly the CPS. I would check the fuel pressue after the vehichle sits and see if it is holding pressure of leaking down. (i am already on my 3rd fuel pump b/c of starting issues). If it is not holding pressure the tank needs to be dropped and replace the fuel pump

Sounds like you may have a bad fuel pressure regulator try turning key on wait 15-30 seconds then try to start. If it starts then you have trouble with fuel pressure loss. Camshaft sensor- if it goes bad it will not start at all till you change it. dale jeepman600@aol.com bad regulator possible problem :2cents:

I have the same vehicle with the same problem.

Apparently it is a leaky O-ring at the fuel pump that does not keep the fuel pressure up. I havn't fixed mine yet but would be interested to know how you proceed with yours.

I had same problem with 2001 GCL Laredo. Dealership diagnosed as "quad-ring" It was. Its a four dollar part that seals where fuel pump goes into tank but pain in the rear to replace b/c tank has to be dropped. Don't replace entire pump or fuel filter if not certain something wrong with them too.
