Since we have a new forum going, does anyone else here actually do any SCCA Club racing? I normally run a 99 SSB Miata, though have driven a few Spec Miatas, and the winter project is to get my ITS 944 back up and running.

Sure. We build and race Formula Vee, Formula First (S), Formula Continental and support several customers with Formula Fords, Spec Miata's, and more.

Been meaning to do it myself, but my father had several Showroom Stock wins in the 70's and 80's.

Is there any SCCA club racing in Alabama (or surrounding states) that anyone knows about? I'm moving there this coming summer, and would *love* to do some club racing. Also, how does one go about renting/buying a "racer" or "formula" class vehicle?

We rent Formula V's and Formula Firsts. If you are interested in buying a Formula V check out our web site www.sracing.com. There is a "For Sale and Wanted" section there that has lots of V's.

Barber Motorsports track is located in Birmingham AL. There is Memphis Motorsports park in TN, Atlanta Motorsports Park, Roebling Road, etc.

BTW, There is a short movie of one of our Formula Firsts at Gateway International (St. Louis) on this page. www.sracing.com/customer.htm
Lots of performance for not a lot of money. (Rent or buy)

Yep. I've been racing in ITS in a Sentra SE-R, but that car is being converted to EP and it's about time I finish my ITS 944.

Oh yeah, I know who Dave Shullick is. I used to spend summers at Oswego Speedway. In fact, I remember the late great Jim Shampine.

Always great when there's a fellow supermodified fan on the boards, particularly one who remembers Mr. Supermodified himself. I unfortunately am too young to have seen the Pine race, but I've seen Doug Heveron race, and if Shampine was better than Heveron then he had to have been magnificient to watch.

However, I remain a big fan of The Shoe because, after all, I am an Ohioan.

Heh. I remember Hevron's first season. :) Yeah, Shampine was better for sure. I remember when he came out with the offset. I was speachless when he was killed. I still cannot believe he's gone.

I also shared a house with one of Hevron's cousins.

I used to do roll cages for SCCA cars, drag cars and a few circle track cars. Did Solo 1 and 2 and 1 ITC race at Road Atlanta but was burned out by then and I hated mixed group racing. Got back into bikes and was renewed for a while. Still have a lot of buds doing the SCCA thing.

I always wanted to build a SBC super mod type of car for roadracing. The thing would be incredible. Kind of like an old 50's formula one car except with huge tires and brakes { and lots of hp }. Can you imagine unleashing the thing down the original Road Atlanta's back straight { before the chicane }. When you started down the hill towards the dip your hair would probably stand straight up !

As much as I hate to admit it, the dip at Road Atlanta had to go. In the last few years before the dip, there were CART teams that were breaking chassis at 220 MPH at the bottom of the dip because the cars were bottoming out so hard.

I think you mean IMSA or Petit LeMans or whatever the current sanctioning body is. I don't think CART ever raced at Road A.

The sports prototypes were flying on the back straight. I think the dip went away because of motorcycle racer deaths.

For club racers it was a gas.

CART never raced at Road Atlanta, but they did a lot of testing there. There was supposed to be a CART race there in the early 2000's, but the date was taken away by Chicagoland (owned by Chip Ganassi) at the last minute. Removing the dip was part of the original provision for CART running there.

The prototypes flying on the back straight had nothing to do with the dip. There's a crest about 1/3 of the way down that has been shaved down in the last few years to prevent them from flying away. A chiocaine was put at this crest in the IMSA GTP days, and was used for a couple of races (it's still there, but very rarely, if ever used)
