What would win? A 1986 Nissan 300zx NA or a 80-90 Honda Civic CX Hatchback

Ive got a 3L V6 in my 300zx with 275000+ kms on it, with no mods.

This guy has a 1.5L 4cylinder with performance cold air intake and exhaust. He could have more mods im not sure. And he has about 50000 kms less than me. And im not sure about the exact year of his car.

I estimate my HP around 150 or so. I think I could take him, what you guys think?

its amazing how negative Fiend was...the 300z should have no problem with a 1.5L SOHC honduh, unless it is spraying or is turbo'd.

300zx SUX <---fiend youre a moron

that old of a z? yeah, maybe itll have a lil trouble......but take a 96 twin turbo and pair it up with anything ya got

oh, and fiend......LAMBORGHINI DIABLO? why dont you show us your car? hmm? most often people who dont know jack about cars use that as their dream car.........so, show us you know jack about cars.....coz at this point youre lookin immature, the goal here is for people to get a pure and somewhat unbiased opinion on car comparisons, not a flame war.

As for my opinion, that Z isnt gonna have much trouble, but both cars are old so their individual conditions are gonna seriously affect the outcome of the race, but remember the Z is a sportscar and the Civ is an econobox (ESPECIALLY in the 80s and early 90s)

Sounds good, I don't know when I'll race him, probably when the snow is gone or on a warm day. Thanks for the comments.

I got a newbie question, what does SOHC and VTEC stand for/what are they?

And also what are some mods I could do to improve my Z? The engine has 275000+ kms on it so would it even be worth modding that? I was thinking about intake(K&N) and exhaust(Dynomax)... any suggestions?

SOHC=Single Overhead Cam
DOHC=Dual Overhead Cams
I think VTEC= Variable valve Timing and Electronic lift Control.
I feel if you want the most out of that motor, it should be rebuilt. From there, the usual intake, exhaust and headers. It would probaly be better if you want to really race to get a TT engine and do a engine transplant. That will give you a better starting point and it will also respond to the mods I mentioned above. There are many other things you can do but thats what I feel you should do first.

I see. Both of those options; rebuild, buy a TT do an engine swap - they would cost allot of money which i unfortunately dont have :-\.

I'm currently upgrading my worn out brakes, ball-joints, strutrod bearings, misc small problems with my car right now. I got the brakes done - new rear calipers and rotors: $800! I have to get the wheel alignment done as well. Once all that is done I want to do something with the engine. I was reading about engine swapping for my Z and some people were doing an RB20DET Nissan Skyline engine swap.

Ok, next question would be what would be the most affordable, yet poweful and upgradable, solution to my engine "problem"? To let you know im a poor high school student, lol. If you could list some approximate prices of an engine swap and new engine, or to rebuild a 1986 Nissan 300zx NA engine, that would be great.

Thanks for the help guys!:D

I think the best thing to do with an older Z would be to find the same year model engine, only the turbo'd version.Go to some junk yards or even looking in classified adds, people sell there old Z for cheap and u can use it as a parts car for your Z.You could go for the Skyline motor, but if you can't afford a TT motor, i wouldn't even be thinking about a Skyline motor.Just finding one might be a problem along with how much it's gonna cost you, plus the insane installation fee you would pay if you could even find any shop that does that.

My advice, find the Turbo motor for your model Z.

how much do you think a 86 turbo would cost with low kms??

So ya I know eklipse in person and his car, and the guy he’s racing. So I was just playing with him, and truth be told I think his car is pretty sweet so do go thinking that I was all serious about the previous statement.

screw finding parts at a junkyard, find a whole freakin' wreked car, either at a junkyard or in a mechanics shop auction, just make sure none of the critical engine/intake parts/electronics are damaged. even better find one that was rearended really hard. It doesn't really matter on mileage unless it is well over 150,000 and smoking, these engines are VERY tough, also the rb20dett swap would be great in that car, i know it wouldn't have much bottom end torque as the 3.0, but how many people do you know with that motor?

Yea, the thing is finding a wrecked 86 300zx in Saskatchewan. But even if i do I would have to save up to buy it. How much would a wrecked Z with a low KM engine be even?

Like what are the general price ranges of a Twin Turbo? and an RB20DET engine?

I might be better off just selling my Z and buying a different one in better condition, ya know.

A Chevy 327 will fit in there if you want to get crazy. The car won't do as well in the turns, but it will kick ass in the straightaways. Besides...it's great for that shock factor when you drive by sounding like an old corvette:)

What about this: Would it be better for me to fix up my car cosmetically rather than do engine work?

I have a bunch of minor and maybe a couple major problems i'm gradually getting fixed. I recently had the brakes done, new calipers and rotors, that cost $800. I have to get my alignment fixed and I need new strut rod bushings. Then I'll probably fix the rust on my right-rear fender. Then I need to get a new antenna shaft, left high-beam bulb, left foglight bulb, new left T-Roof, paint, right speaker shock tower cover, etc etc. So I think I would rather get all that done first. My engine is in good condition and it works. So yea

I have 2 300ZX's and the'll blow the doors off MOST street cars including the Civic. http://z32racing.50megs.com/Z/_photos/_20030524/page_01.htm
Want to see what a 300ZX NA can do? Better yet go to Escort racing and see what a TT will do. This is just a few for those of you that like to cut the Z's. If this isn't good enough I have a 3rd Z (not running) I'm putting a VH45 engine in. In case you don't know what a VH45 Nissan is, it's a V8 that puts out 320 HP stock, and with TT and exhaust and injectors, 'bout 1000HP.
The SURGEON GENERAL say's," SMOKING V8 is OK."
