Two problems, oil leaking badly from underneath rear of engine. Suspect rear main seal and or pan gasket. Will check the oil pressure sending unit and valve cover gasket.
Second issue is alot of oil into the air filter. Can a faulty PCV valve cause this much oil to accumulate in the filter? What internal engine problems might cause this blow back?

Do u have d 4.0 engine. if so replace the rear CCV breather tube. The hose going from the valve cover to the intake manifold. if this is blocked it would cause oil blowback through the front hose. Happened to me, this fixed it.

I have the same problem on my 89 cherokee ltd. I am going to clean the tube that caribean is talking about. This tube, from the intake to the valve cover should create vacum in the valve cover . The big hose leading to the air filter box should be drawing in clean air, not blowing out oil and steam. In order for this to work there has to be vacum in the valve cover, if the valve cover gasket is leaking, then you will loose vacum from the gasket , and the oil fill cap etc. I am going to replace my gasket, cleaning the mating surfaces with brake cleaner, or carb cleaner, or laquer thinner, anything that does not leave oil based like varsol or paint thinner , gas etc. Then I will put RTV silicone sealant on BOTH sides of the gasket before installing. Next, my oil filler cap on the valve cover is leaking as well, so I will buy a new one or replace the rubber on the old one. Hopefully, this will give me good vacum iin the valve cover and fix the problem. I wish us both luck.

Thanks for the great tips. I never would have picked up on the vacum thing, but that makes perfect sense. This vehicle belongs to my son and he works for NAPA and gets all of his parts (and mine) at a significant discount. We will start on the top end stuff and work our way down to the rear main seal. It is possible that all of his oil loss is coming from up above. We have not really gone underneath to look. He needs to clean up the engine first and run it to see where the leak(s) are coming from. Thanks again.
