My 1996 Lumina APV van needs an engine job. I thought I would do it myself. But need to gather info and the first being the procedure for removing the engine after disconnecting all wires pipes etc. Any advice? Thanks.

I think (but not sure) that the engine has to come out the bottom of the APV, by lowering the entire cradle and suspension assembly. The upper motor mounts and the tops of the struts, plus the tie rod ends, brake lines, and anything else associated would have to be disconnected to achieve this. I hope there is a simpler answer, but I believe this is the way.

On the lighter side, if you have the facilities to do it this way, once everything is disconnected there are only four large bolts holding the cradle to the body, and then the whole engine/transaxle is right there on the ground, easy to work with.

Thanks. I think you are right about the out the bottom route. I wasn't sure whether to repair this vehicle or just scrap it.. but since the body and chassis is in excellent shape, I thought for the cost of repairing it woud be like having a new car for cheap, relatively speaking. I was thinking of rebuilding the engine and transaxle. In any event, I think I'll give it a go and if it gets too involved , I can always scrap it.

Alright man this is what you need to do to change out this engine..... step 1, go buy a chiltons manuel Not A HAYNES! step 2, jack up the car and start disassembling the under side of the car according to how the book tells you too.

Engine comes out from the bottom.Make sure the steering wheel is locked. It has an airbag and you do not want to screw up the clock spring. The outer tie rods have to be disconnected.Do not use a pickle fork on the outer tie rod ends(boot rippers),2-3 smack with a big hammer on the knuckle will remove them

Thanks. I have been studying the situation and you are right that out the bottom is the way. Still trying to decide if its worth doing all this or just buy new wheels.

the bottom is the only way, and I disagree about which manual to buy. Chiltons haven't been worth wiping your ass with for years. It's a lot of work, but if the rest of the vehicle is in good shape,a nd you have the time, why not?

Thanks for the reply. Never really liked Chiltons either, but haynes doesn't have a manual for this Lumina. May have to get GM version. Its not that I have the time or need to do it, but would like the experience of having taken an engine out and actually rebuild it myself.
