does anyone how to remove the shifter knob off of a 97 SL1

How hard is REALLY REALLY REALLY hard ????? And is it REALLY going to come off. Is it just plastic in there? Can I just break it up till it falls off?

no just was askin to see if i was going to be wasting my time

no, its a interference fit, its real snug, but shouldn't brake

get a small flat head screw driver and at the base of the shift knob in front (side closest to the radio) there should be a flat spot. put the srew driver in there and gently pry up and it will pop right off... took me 3 weeks and a trip to the dealership before i figured it out lol.

i figured it out in like 20 seconds.. lol. i changed my shifter knob and added a boot. looks like a manual now

i tried to get mine off by just pulling and to no success but i just bought a new knob today so i went to pull it off and bamm came right off not alot of trouble. i imagine it is because here it is in the 90's and my car was probably in the 100's i am sure heat probably helped.

I saw the post on using a small screwdriver to get the shift knob off, but do you have to do anything to the boot? I dont want to break the thing. Let me know please cuz i wanna replace the knob asap cuz there is like stuff coming off in my hands from the friction of the knob and if looks bad anyway. no you dont have to do anything to the boot, but just to make sure you dont break anything at the top of the boot right below the knob, twist the boot counter-clockwise. This will release the boot and you can push it down out of the way.
